Oregon 5 Million Lives Network

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) launched the 100,000 Lives Campaign on December 14th, 2004 with the aim of saving 100,000 lives by June 14, 2006 through participation in specific interventions demonstrated to improve care.  As of January 2007, the campaign has been expanded to add new interventions and a new goal of preventing harm to 5 million people. Campaign participants pledge to implement and continue working on the following additional interventions as part of their participation in the 5 Million Lives Campaign:

  • Prevent Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) infection ...by reliably implementing scientifically proven infection control practices throughout the hospital
  • Reduce harm from high-alert medications ...starting with a focus on anticoagulants, sedatives, narcotics, and insulin
  • Reduce surgical complications ...by reliably implementing the changes in care recommended by the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP)
  • Prevent pressure ulcers ...by reliably using science-based guidelines for prevention of this serious and common complication
  • Deliver reliable, evidence - based care for congestive heart failure …to reduce readmissions
  • Get Boards on board …by defining and spreading new and leveraged processes for hospital Boards of Directors, so they can become far more effective in accelerating the improvement of care
  • Deploy Rapid Response Teams …at the first sign of patient decline – and before catastrophic cardiac or respiratory event.
  • Deliver reliable, evidence - based care for acute myocardial infarction … to prevent deaths from heart attack.
  • Prevent adverse drug events …by reconciling patient medications at every transition point in care.
  • Prevent central line infections …by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically grounded steps.
  • Prevent surgical site infections …by following a series of steps, including reliable, timely administration of correct perioperative antibiotics.
  • Prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia …by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically grounded steps.

About the Oregon 5 Million Lives Network

The Oregon 5 Million Lives Network announced the kick-off of the IHI's 5 Million Lives Campaign in the state on March 2, 2007. A national effort to dramatically reduce incidents of medical harm in U.S. hospitals, the 5 Million Lives Campaign challenges hospitals across the nation to adopt 12 changes in care that save lives and reduce patient injuries. Its goal is to protect patients from five million incidents of medical harm over the next two years, ending December 2008. Already, 44 Oregon hospitals are participating in the IHI Campaign.

Six Oregon-based organizations — Acumentra Health, CareOregon, Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS), Oregon Medical Association (OMA), Oregon Nurses Association (ONA), and the Oregon Patient Safety Commission — have joined forces as the Oregon 5M Lives Network to promote and support the campaign in the state. Many of these organizations participated in IHI’s successful 100,000 Lives Campaign, which concluded last year. The 5 Million Lives Campaign builds upon the success of that campaign, in which 3,100 participating hospitals nationwide reduced inpatient deaths by an estimated 122,000 over an 18-month period.

“IHI has established bold objectives and a concrete goal. The Oregon 5M Lives Network and Oregon hospitals are proud to support the campaign through a collaborative statewide effort,” said Gwen Dayton, JD, executive vice president and general counsel of OAHHS, speaking for the Oregon 5M Lives Network and OAHHS.

Of the 12 changes in patient care the 5 Million Lives Campaign promotes, the first six are proven interventions successfully used in the 100,000 Lives Campaign. The remaining six are new interventions that will further enhance care to save lives and reduce patient injuries.
